His ancestors came to America from Holland some time before the Revolutionary war and settled at Hagerstown, Maryland.

He was educated in his native state; he was of German descent, and spoke and read the German and English languages with equal ease. Coming to Fayette County, Pennsylvania, he remained a bachelor until middle age. He followed agricultural pursuits, and died at an advanced age. In his political sympathies he was a Jeffersonian Democrat.
