from earliest boyhood developed strong intellectual capacity. After attending the common schools, he remained sometime at the academy at George's Creek; then took a thorough course of instruction at the South-western State Normal School, at California.
He was first connected with the Southwestern State Normal School in 1866, when he became an instructor in the higher branches, and was later professor of mathematics and book-keeping. In politics he was a stanch Republican, and in religion an earnest worker in the Christian Church, in which he was an elder for over twenty years, and in the Sunday-school, of which he was superintendent for many years.
