He was reared in Ohio and Pennsylvania, received his education in the public schools, and when thirteen years old began boating on the Alle­gheny river, which he followed for some years. He then purchased a farm and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was a Democrat, and a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church.
