General Notes: Husband - Samuel Rodgers

Another source states that he was born in County Donegal, Ireland. [HMC 1909, 789]
He died in 1842. [GPHAV, 286]

He was born in Ireland, and came to Delaware County, Pennsylvania, about 1780, and later to Fayette County, where he married, and in 1798 with his wife settled in Greene Township, Mercer County, where they bought a tract of 400 acres. His wife rode to Mercer County on horseback, while he walked and drove a cow. They packed their household goods and hired two men to bring them in a boat down the Monongahela and Ohio, up the Beaver to New Castle, and then up the Shenango to near their cabin, in Greene Township. Robert and Samuel Henry, brothers of Mrs. Rodgers, had previously come to Crawford County, and on the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Rodgers they walked six miles, and in one day, with the assistance of Mr. Rodgers, they built a cabin 16x16 feet. Here Mr. Rodgers did a large amount of weaving.

He acquired possession of the family property only after a hard struggle, as upon his arrival there he found the land in possession of a squatter.

He and his wife and family came to Greene township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, from Fayette County, and settled on a farm where his son Robert H. would later live. They came via the Monongahela River to Pittsburgh, thence by the Ohio to the mouth of Big Beaver, thence up that stream and the Shenango to their destination, making the whole distance by water.

He was born at Milford, County Down, Ireland. In 1792 he came to Delaware, in which state he lived for three years. Then he came to Fayette County, Pennsylvania, where he resided four years. Moving into Mercer County, Pennsylvania, he settled on a farm of about one hundred and eighty acres.

When he first came to take possession of his land, armed with a deed for four hundred acres, he found a squatter in possession of the property. Not to be deterred from his purpose, however, he promptly started a law suit and, although he won his case, it was only after a long litigation and at the expense of nearly one-half of the cost of his claim.
In those days markets were scarce and transportation facilities most primitive, and this pioneer farmer was often obliged to take the produce of his land to the Mercer market on horseback. Naturally his profits were slow and small and, like most of the settlers of those days, he eked out a scant living by the manufacture of whiskey in addition to his farming. He built the first still in Greene Township, hauling his liquor to Meadville, and selling it at twenty cents per gallon. [HMC 1909, 789]
