General Notes: Husband - John Henry

He came to Clarion County, Pennsylvania, in 1799, being sent to that locality by Gen. Craig to pre-empt 400 acres of land. He located on a homestead, but afterward returned to Westmoreland County, in 1800. The following year, however, he brought his family to Clarion County, and took up his residence on the farm which was for many years thereafter in the possession of his descendants. [CBRCP-CCJC, 1465]

He was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. In 1799 he cleared land in Clarion County and built a small house, and to this he brought his family in the spring of 1800. The location was near that of the old Grange Hall. He was an industrious and successful farmer; starting with one hundred acres which he had himself conquered from the wilderness, he acquired fifty more from the government for the improvements he had put upon the larger tract. Not only he, but his sons, added by purchase to the number of acres belonging to the family estate.

He and his wife had four sons and five daughters. In 1899 a computation was made, and it was found that there were then eight hundred and thirty-seven persons in different parts of the country descended from John Henry.
