General Notes: Husband - John Wilson Marshall

He remained with his father until twenty-four years of age. Shortly afterward he purchased a homestead in Wayne township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. After their mar-riage he and his wife resided on a farm and in the village of Dayton until their removal to Atwood, where he entered the mercantile business. He was engaged in this for nine years, until 1879, when he moved to a new farm residence. He owned about 125 acres of land adjoining Atwood. This village was laid out by Mr. Marshall, and he was its first post-master. He accomplished also the laying out of the Atwood cemetery, and the organization and incorpora-tion of the association which controlled it. The United Presbyterian church of Atwood was liberally sup-ported by him as well. He was one of its oldest members, and was made an elder of the church October 12, 1866. Their house of worship, a very creditable structure, was built by him on contract, for the sum of $2,300, in 1873.

After marriage, he and his wife settled on a farm near Dayton, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, later owned by Thomas H. Marshall. They resided on this farm for several years, and then removed to Dayton. He, together with Dr. W. Hosick, started the first drug store ever established in that town. Mr. Marshall was at the same time proprietor of what was later called the Exchange Hotel, in Dayton.
