This family has been established in Pennsylvania since the eighteenth century. The earliest record obtainable is of a native Pennsylvanian who followed the trade of shoemaker in York County. He was a strong Democrat in all political controversies and with his wife a member of the Lutheran Church.

She was born in Germany, near the bank of the river Rhine, and came to the United States when she was seven years of age. The vessel in which she made the journey consumed thirteen weeks in making the voyage.
