He settled in what became Taylor Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania.

He settled near the site that became Mahoningtown, Pennsylvania, where he operated a primitive distillery, which business was then as legitimate and respectable as any other vocation. It is said that he was something of a hunter, and could bring in as many wolf-scalps for the bounty as "any other man."
