He served in the Spanish-American War, enlisting in Troop I, 3rd U. S. Vol. Cavalry. He served twelve years in the Montana Legislature: four years, from 1917 to 1921, in the House and eight years, from 1921 to 1929, in the State Senate. He was a member of B. P. O. E. at Miles City and Stillwater Lodge, No. 62, A. F. & A. M. at Columbus, MT. The family were members of the Presbyterian Church.
