After receiving a common school education, he entered his father's store as a clerk, and upon the death of the lat­ter he became a member of the firm, and assisted in managing the business. Politically, he was a Repub­lican, was a member of the I. O. O. F., the K. of P., the K. O. T. M. and the Jr. O. U. A. M.
