After acquiring an education, he entered the mercantile business, engaging in it until 1854, when he took his initiative step in banking at Elgin, Illinois. He then went to Iowa and engaged in the milling business. When the Keystone National Bank was organized he returned to Erie, Pennsylvania, and was connected with that bank thereafter.
