He and his wife first lived in Clarksburg, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, and he worked at his trade of tanning. They moved from Clarksburg to Westmoreland County, where he engaged in farming, and continued at that occupation for many years thereafter. They lived in Westmoreland County for five years and then moved back to Indiana County, Conemaugh township. In the spring of 1884 they removed to Young township, Indiana County, near Elder's Ridge, Armstrong County.
