He attended the township schools, and then was principally engaged in farming. In 1883 he established a general hard­ware store at Clark's Station, which he conducted three years, and after that time was engaged in the butcher business one year. He was one of the stockholders in the Stoneboro Glass Works, also a member of the K. & L. of H. of New Vernon and of the A. O. U. W. of Clark's Mills.
