He was educated in the Burgettstown, Washington County, Pennsylvania, schools, McDonald Academy and Washington and Jefferson Col­lege, graduating with the degree B. S. at the latter in the class of 1902. He then registered as a law student under the late Joseph Hays, at Pittsburgh, and then as­sisted in organizing the Farmers' National Bank of Hickory, Pennsylvania, and settled at Hickory where he engaged in banking. He was one of the town's substantial citizens. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church. In politics he followed in the footsteps of his father, being a stanch Democrat. He was identified with the Masonic fraternity and retained membership in his Greek letter society of college days.
