General Notes: Husband - William Alexander Hayes

He was educated in the Franklin County, Pennsylvania, schools and his first work was as salesman for Stephen Culbertson, of Shippensburg. Later he engaged in merchandising in Juniata County for about two years, after which he went to Ohio and became associated with F. and S. D. Campbell, whose brother later became Governor of that state. After two years, however, he moved back to Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and engaged in farming. When he reached Franklin he had but seventy dollars in his pocket, but he also possessed an immense amount of grit and determination to win out in his life work. Soon thereafter he purchased a farm from Judge Chambers of Chambersburg, and later bought a farm from Crawford Duffield, of Montgomery township, and one of twenty-five acres from the Blair estate. The first of these properties was deeded to William McClure by William Penn, through whom it came to the Chambersburg bank and was then purchased by Judge George Chambers. Living there until 1886, Mr. Hayes then purchased a house from Mathew Smith's heirs. He was urged to accept the post of burgess, but as he has always disliked official duties he refused. He was a very strong Republican, however. For many years he was a very important factor in the Presbyterian Church of Mercersburg, and became one of its trustees.
