He entered Wash­ington and Jefferson College, leaving at close of sophomore year in spring of 1891; was admitted as a cadet to the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, NY, June 1, 1891, by appointment of the Secretary of War, on recommendation of Hon. J. W. Ray, member of Congress from the Twenty-fourth District of Pennsylvania.
