After attending the local schools and various colleges, he studied medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. The University sent him to Jamaica and other places as a medical doctor to work with the people in 1969. On May 28, 1970, he received his M.D. degree. His internship was in Allegheny Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA, for one year. His goal was to be a surgeon.
