He obtained a good common school education and remained at home until he was twenty-one years old, when he came to Leechburg, Pennsylvania. He began work in the rolling mills, accepting a place at the bottom and working his way up until he was made a roller, in 1899, a position that required knowledge and experience.
Politically he was a Democrat, and fraternally an Odd Fellow and a member of the Royal Arcanum. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Leechburg.
