He was raised on a farm, attending school only winters, the usual lot of farmers' sons in those days. He attended the Normal School at Edinboro, Pennsylvania, in 1862 and 1863, and afterward taught two years as principal of Mosiertown Academy. He then went to Allegheny College at Meadville, Pennsylvania, where he graduated after a four years' course; he then registered as a student of Dr. William Gamble, of Mosiertown, and graduated in medicine and surgery at Bellevue Hospital Medical College, New York City, in March, 1871. He commenced the practice of his profession at Edinboro in November of the same year.
