General Notes: Husband - John Swisshelm

When small he was bound out until he was sixteen years old, and he learned the blacksmith's trade. He bought a farm in Penn township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, but later sold out and purchased one hundred acres in Patton. Here he carried on wagon-work until he received a stroke of paralysis which disabled his right side. He was always a democrat.

He learned the blacksmith's trade with William Gray, at Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania. Soon after completing his apprenticeship he settled on Frankstown Road, or at what was later known as Rodi, establishing himself as a blacksmith and wagonmaker. This business he carried on many years, finally moving to Patton township, where he purchased a farm and thereafter combined agriculture with his trade. This farm comprised one hundred acres. Mr. Swisshelm was a Democrat and a member of the Hebron United Presbyterian church.
