He was a farmer by occupation, and cleared and improved a large farm in Venango County, Pennsylvania.

Thirteen children, eight boys and five girls, were born to him by his first wife, prior to 1836, when she died. With his second wife he had eight children, three sons and five daughters. In October and November 1822, he moved to Venango County, PA, from Center county, and settled in Sugarcreek (now Oakland) in 1824. [HVC 1879, 196]
