In his boyhood he lived near the present town of Roxbury, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, but later settled in Lack Township, Juniata County.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Waterloo, Juniata County. His land in Lack Township, which he had purchased from the Indians, was held in the Neely family until 1873.
