He was of Scotch descent and settled in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, where he resided until his death.

He located in Conemaugh township, Indiana County, in 1818, and in Saltsburg in 1836. He was a cabinet maker and carpenter.

The source does not make clear which of his children were born to which of his wives. They are all listed here as offspring of his first wife, but this is probably not correct.
