He travelled to New Orleans in 1853, and spent the winter of 1853 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. He returned home in 1854. After marriage, he settled in Canal township, on a farm he had purchased two years previous to his marriage. They had a family of three children, two sons and one daughter. He followed dealing in stock, in connection with farming. In October, 1861, he enlisted in Company I, of the 4th P. V. C., under the command of Captain C. E. Taylor. He served eleven months, and on account of bad health he was discharged from the service. [HVC 1879, 555]

He died at the age of sixty years.
