He was a descendant of Aaron Ross, a pioneer of Pennsylvania. He was a soldier in the War of 1812 and came to the family farm [in New Vernon Township, Mercer County, PA] in 1817. He was a member of the Fairfield Presbyterian Church and a Democrat.
