General Notes: Husband - John Speir, Sr.

At the age of twenty-one his father set him up in the mercantile business in Edinburgh, Scotland, which he carried on about two years. In 1788 failing health compelled him to sell out his stock, and he immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland, soon afterward removing to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he went into business. The dishonesty of his partner forced him to again give up business, and he removed to Little Beaver, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. In the fall of 1801, he and his wife, with their three eldest children, removed from Beaver County to West Salem Township, Mercer County, locating about one mile west of the site of Greenville.

General Notes: Wife - Ann Harnit

She was born and reared near Baltimore, Maryland. During the Revolutionary War Mrs. Martha Washington boarded at the tavern of her parents, at Warm Springs, Virginia, where Washington occasionally visited his wife. At that time Mrs. Washington presented to Miss Harnit an eight-gallon iron kettle, which was later owned by her grandson, Erwin Brown, of West Salem Township, Mercer County.
