A native of New England, he settled in Cussewago Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, about 1816. He first settled in Cussewago Township on a part of the farm later owned by James Nash; he afterward bought the farm later owned by Calvin Waldo, and in 1839 came to Venango Township and located on a farm later occupied by his son Paul, where he remained one year. He then sold this place and went to Michigan, but after an absence of nearly a year returned and repurchased the property he had sold the year previous. This he cleared, improved and lived on till his death.

He and his wife were parents of thirteen children, only four were still living in 1885.
