General Notes: Husband - Joseph Mayhew Harding

He was born on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, was graduated from Harvard College, and subsequently settled in Bradford County, Pennsyvania, in 1812 on a farm, and for twenty-one consecutive winters taught school in Newbury, later a part of Williamsport. He was drafted for the War of 1812, of which his father, Samuel, was a pensioner, and participated in the battles of Lake Champlain and Bennington. Joseph died in the faith of the Methodist Episcopal church, of which organization he was a class leader in one church for twenty-one years. [HVC 1890, 866]

Until the year 1834 the greater portion of his life was passed at Sullivan, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, but at this time the family removed to Mantua, Ohio, where relatives had already made their home. Remaining a year in Ohio, he then returned to Pennsylvania and settled at Rutland, where he bought a farm upon which he passed the remainder of his life. He was a college graduate, having matriculated at Harvard, Rutgers, or Bowdoin College, and was a teacher in his earlier life before he became a farmer; he was an active and prominent member of the Methodist Episcopal church.

General Notes: Wife - Permelia Meltire Hayden

She died of typhus fever.

Dr. Robins, of Painted Post, New York, a cousin of Mrs. Harding, was at one time grand master of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of the state of New York, and a well-known man in the community. Dr. Robins, of Hornellsville, New York, was also her cousin; as was likewise General Hayden, surveyor-general of the United States after the Mexican war, in the district from the Missouri river to the Pacific.
