He was brought up to mercantile pursuits, came to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1795, and began merchandising, in which he was quite successful. In his early life he took an important part in public affairs. He was frequently a member of the Borough Council, was lieutenant-colonel of the Sixty-sixth Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia, in 1807, and coroner from Jan. 12, 1809, to Dec. 18, 1811.
