General Notes: Wife - Rachel Work

When she was about eight years of age the family moved to Squirrel Hill, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and four years later to Indiana County, where she lived with her parents on what is now known as the E. I. Work farm. There is no special history of her early life except that recalled by members of the family as related in later years by herself, as such instances as these: When quite a young girl she and her brother James made trips on pack-horses to Ligonier, Westmoreland County, for supplies for the family. In those early pioneer days it was the custom to cultivate flax and manufacture it into cloth for the use of the family, and later for sale. It was not unusual for Rachel to go on horseback seven miles beyond Indiana to the store of Archie Stewart to exchange linens of their own weaving for calico. It was considered of some importance in those days to have a calico dress. She was a member of the Presbyterian church. She was married at the age of about 25 years to Robert Hamilton, of the Mahonings, and they settled on the farm now owned by Allen Hamilton, where she lived the rest of her life. She was always a frugal, industrious, discreet woman, of a cheerful, sunny disposition, a quiet, contented home-keeper, scarcely ever from home during her early married life. But in after years Aunt Rachel, as she was familiarly known, was a welcome visitor at many homes. She was considered a woman of good judgment and unerring in her counsels to those around her. She was the mother of seven sons and one daughter, and lived to see them settled around her. Hers was said to have been a natural death, at the ripe old age of 84. [WF, 13]
