He was a watchmaker in early life. He was soon called to fill public positions. He was successively Postmaster, County Surveyor, County Commissioner, Brigadier General, Representative in Congress, 1816, and Surveyor General. "A dark complexioned, tall, active man, of domestic habits, methodical and prosperous."
