He and his brothers came to America in about 1767, and after living in New Jersey, Chester County, Pennsylvania, Centre and Westmoreland counties, they came to Venango County in 1801 or 1802. [HVC 1879, 564]

He located in Venango County, Pennsylvania, on the Oil Creek road where Mrs. William M. Lamb long resided. The farm was originally secured by his brother Archibald, who removed to Ohio in 1820, and it was the scene of Drake's initial oil operations.
