General Notes: Husband - George Sherman Young

He grew to the age of fifteen years on the home farm, attending the country schools for some years. He then started to learn the tailor trade with George Ifft & Son, of Evans City, Pennsylvania, where he remained for two years and then worked two years with his brother, who was in the same business, and from there went to Harmony and worked four months with A. W. Latshow. He then located at Zelienople and embarked in business for himself, one year later going to Chicago, Illinois, where he remained for a short time. In 1901 he came to Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, where he purchased a desirable lot, erected a suitable building and opened up a merchant tailoring establishment, eventually having the largest one of its kind in the city. He employed about sixteen people and had a fine line of custom, carrying an exclusive line of goods and producing work of the very best quality and finish. He prospered after coming to Ellwood City and owned considerable valuable real estate there, including his store building, which was 22 by 50 feet in dimensions, and an attractive home residence on the corner of Seventh Street and Wayne Avenue.
The family belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church. In politics, Mr. Young was a Democrat. He served three years as a member of the School Board and was on the building committee when the new school edifice in his ward was erected. He was a Knight of Pythias of the Uniform Rank, and also belonged to the old lodge of the Golden Eagles.
