General Notes: Husband - George Carlon Welker

He was reared in Findley Township on a farm and attended the public schools and a few terms in the Grove City College. He then taught school for eight winters and worked during the summer months at carpenter work. In 1889 he embarked on a small scale in business at Wheatland, where he eventually developed a large, well-stocked general store.
Politically Mr. Welker was a Democrat and active in the work of his favorite party. He held the office of school director and was a member of the borough council. He was appointed postmaster of Wheatland under President Cleveland during his second term and held the office for five years. In 1908 he received, unsolicited, the nomination for clerk of courts on the Democratic ticket. After a hotly contested campaign he was elected over his Republican opponent by a plurality of 1,231 votes, although the Republican majority to overcome was about 2,500.
Mr. Welker was an active member in the Odd Fellows order and advanced to the Patriarchs Militant. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias fraternity. In his church relations he was connected with the Presbyterian Church.
