He was reared on the homestead farm, learned the carpenter's trade, and followed that business many years at Centreville, Butler County, PA, to which place he removed from Mercer county. In 1864 he settled on a farm in Slippery Rock township, Butler County, where his son Robert would later reside, which property he had purchased some years before, and there he died. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church, and in politics, he was a stanch supporter of the Democratic party.
