He was a farmer of Randolph township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.

Civil War: He enlisted in Company F, Eighty-third Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, at the same time as his son Adolphus, but in the battle of the Wilderness received a wound in the neck and right arm which disabled him in this his first engagement.
