General Notes: Husband - Col. James Kinnear

A native of Scotland and an early and prominent resident of Franklin, where he owned the leading hotel of the period, known as the "Kinnear House." His wife was of Dutch parentage.

He was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, an area now within the bounds of Schuylkill County.

James Kinnear, one of the best known citizens of Franklin, was elected to the associate judgeship in 1845. He is well remembered as the proprietor of the leading tavern in the county seat for many years, and was a gentleman of some local prominence. [HVC 1890, 171]

James Kinnear kept a hotel on the corner of Liberty street and West Park. It was a famous hostelry in its day. With all his peculiarities the colonel was a genial, kind-hearted man, and always made his guests comfortable. He was county treasurer in 1819, and associate judge in 1845 and onward. His man George was quite as much of a character as his patron, and had a very high opinion of the character and dignity of the hotel. [HVC 1890, 350]

He served six months in the Militia at Fort Meggs, on the Maumee River, in his 18th year, and acquitted himself well. After his marriage he settled in Franklin, Pennsylvania, and was a merchant for several years. In January, 1819, he was appointed County Treasurer, a lucrative office. He was a Major of Militia and later Colonel. In 1824 he entered the hotel business in Franklin and kept an excellent and orderly house. He was appointed in 1845, by the Legislature, Associate Judge of Venango County. He was wealthy and popular.

General Notes: Wife - Jane Hale

She was of Dutch ancestry.

“Died, in Franklin, Pa., March 31st, 1871, Mrs. Jane U. Kinnear, widow of the late Judge Kinnear, aged 70 years.
“Mrs. Kinnear was well known in this community as one of our most loved and venerated older citizens. A large number of friends mourn her departure.
“She was the first member of the Episcopal church in this place, a devout and consistent communicant, and for many years one of its most active co-laborers.
“A long and useful life was closed by a sickness which extended through nearly four years, yet she bore all her sufferings, not only without a murmur, but with a resignation and cheerfulness which bore strong testimony to the power of the religion of the Cross. She died, as she had lived, in the confidence of a certain faith-in the comfort of a reasonable religious and holy life; in favor with her God and in perfect charity with all the world. [HVC 1879, 491]
She died in 1870. [HVC 1890, 347]
