He received a classical education; commenced the study of medicine at Dublin, Ireland, in October, 1846, and graduated there May 6, 1851. For a period of ten years he was connected with the English service as medical officer. He came to America permanently in 1863, settled in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and practiced there.
