She was the daughter of Walter James and Annie Lee (Millar) MacIndoe and granddaughter of William and Agnes Wallace (Campbell) MacIndoe and William Guernsey and Susan Leroy Millar. She was a descendant of Sir William Wallace and of Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland. She attended Miss Graham's School, New York City, and graduated from the Horace Mann School of Columbia University.
