He was reared on a farm, educated at the common schools, and became a prominent and well-to-do farmer, owning two tracts of land.

His lands were located in Findlay and North Fayette townships, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and bordered on the waters of Montours Run. They were members of Montours Church.
