He came to America in about 1820 from Ireland and settled in Venango County, Pennsylvania, near Clinton­ville. He became a farmer and acquired land of his own in the county. He had been a soldier in the Irish re­bellion of 1819, and after coming to America he em­braced the political opinions of the Demo­cratic party; all of the family were members of the Presbyterian church.
