He became one of the influential men of his day in Oakland Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania, where he served many years as justice of the peace and was a prosperous farmer. In his younger days he had taught school. Politically he was a Democrat of the old school, and in religion he was a stanch Presbyterian, serving for years as elder in the local church.
