General Notes: Husband - Hon. John Gilmore

He was born in a part of Bedford County, Pennsylvania, near Stony Creek, that later became Somerset County. Shortly after his birth, his father moved to Washington, Washington County, where he was educated and studied law with Col. Bradford. He was admitted to the bar in 1801, and soon removed to Pittsburgh. But when Butler County was organized, he was appointed Deputy States Attorney, and, early in 1803, removed to Butler. About the year 1816, he was elected to the Legislature, being re-elected several successive years. During this time, he was chosen Speaker of the House. In 1828, he was elected to Congress (the year Gen. Jackson was elected President). He remained in close relations with Jackson's administration. He was re-elected in 1830. Later in life, he was elected State Treasurer of Pennsylvania. He had acquired a considerable quantity of land, which he parted with to those of limited means on easy terms. [HBC 1883, 50]

He moved to Butler, Pennsylvania, and married a Miss Purviance at that place. [HWC 1882, 246] No other source confirms this.
