General Notes: Husband - David Gross

He was reared at the old family homestead in Beaver township, Snyder County, Pennsylvania, his early education being acquired in the neighborhood schools. Farm work, as he found it in his early years, not being to his liking, he sought more congenial employment as a clerk in a store at Selins Grove, where he remained until 1857. He then married a woman of Union County, and, removing to that locality, engaged in farming with his father-in-law. He also became interested in stock dealing, and shipped cattle and horses to various points, continuing that business for about two years after giving up, in 1885, the active management of his farming interests. He had 241 acres of land of his own, and two shares, amounting to 100 acres, in the old homestead, with an equity in 700 acres of timber land. He also held a half-interest in a gristmill at Winfield, Pennsylvania. His wide acquaintance in the county, and his popularity among all classes, made him especially available as a candidate for office, and he was often placed on the ticket of the Republican party in his section. In 1894 he was called to the office of sheriff, his term beginning in January, 1895.
Socially, Mr. Gross was identified with the P. O. S. of A., and he was prominent in religious movements in his locality as a member of the Lutheran Church.
