The Groffs came from Germany at a very early day, and the family came to be numerously represented in central Pennsylvania, but the name was commonly spelled Grove. Amos Groff, Adam's great-grandson, came to be about the only one in Union County who retained the old form.

For several generations members of this family followed agricultural pursuits.
