He settled in Franklin, Pennsylvania, upon his arrival from Germany, the land of his birth. He was an officer in the German army during the Franco-Prussian war. In Franklin he found occupation in the oil fields, for many years acting as foreman for his brother, Daniel Grimm, one of the extensive local producers.
