He was reared in his native township and trained to all kinds of farm work. He attended the rural schools and after obtaining what was considered at that day a fair education, he engaged in the business of farming and stock-raising. He owned ninety-five acres of good land which he kept in first-class order. His farm was situated near the town of Kecksburg.
Politically he was a republican. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian church.
