General Notes: Husband - W. H. McDowell


Before the commencement of the Civil War he was engaged in building bridges and railroads in the south. He was assistant superintendent of the Wilmington and Manchester Railroad of North Carolina during the war. He was the chief engineer in building the two bridges over the Cape Fear river, to enable the railroads to enter at one central depot. He was engaged on the Charleston and Savannah Railroad in reconstructing the road, and subsequently was superintendent of the superstructure of the Newport and Cincinnati Railroad bridge.
