General Notes: Husband - Crosby Gray


He received his education in Stewartsville, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and at the age of eighteen years enlisted as a member of Company H, One Hundred and Thirty-sixth Pennsylvania Volunteers, for nine months' service in the Union cause at the time of the Civil war. At the battle of Fredericksburg he was wounded, in December, 1862, and by reason of such wounds was discharged. Later he became a clerk for the Morehead Company, manufacturers of iron, and still later with the Pittsburgh Novelty Works. Soon after leaving this position he was elected superintendent of the board of health for the city of Pittsburg and continued in that position for thirty-three years\emdash from 1869 to 1902. In 1906 he became connected with the office of deeds and registers for Allegheny County. In politics he was a Republican. He was an active member in the Grand Army Post No. 3.
