He was born on the Atlantic ocean when his parents were emigrating from Switzerland to America. He grew up on the homestead in Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and at his father's death, after apportioning his holdings, he inherited the home farm with the homestead building, and passed his life as a stock raiser and farmer. He was active in local politics, being a Whig and later a Repub-lican. He was a Lutheran in religion, and occupied a prominent position in the church.
